Dustin Brown

I was raised on the island of Kauai, an island of Hawaii.
Growing up on the island and in the ocean, surfing was my life. When I was 21 I moved to LA and worked hard in the hospitality industry at night and improved my surfing during the days. Eventually surfing enabled me to travel around the world! I traveled through Europe, Asia, South America, North America and moved to Sydney, Australia in 2006.

On a trip to Melbourne in 2006 I met my wife, Nova. I now live in Melbourne as an Australian resident with Nova and our dog Ninja.

In 2007 my friend from Kauai came to visit me and was very surprised to find that my new lifestyle had left me little time for surfing or sports. He was a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and he took me along to my first BJJ class. There I was manhandled my a small woman and a young boy!! They just kept catching me in armlock after armlock!! What was this Jiu Jitsu business about?!

Not long after I began training I entered my first JiuJitsu competition, I had a lot of nerves, but with some (bad) technique, I won my first few matches. Although I did not win my first comp, It made me better! I found that every time I stepped up and forced myself to compete I would improve instantly! I would be better in class or have new things that I needed to work on in my game. Just like that, I was hooked to JiuJutsu and now BJJ Competition!!

I started training full time and I knew that I would have to work extremely hard to excel at my new passion. I have had my fair share of ups and downs in the sport, injuries, BJJ politics… BUT Jiu Jitsu has changed my life!!

I am now in the best shape physically and mentally that I have ever been. I follow a strict diet, go to yoga every day and I constantly think about bettering my habits in life and in Jiu Jitsu.

I am apart of an amazing Jiu Jitsu Team, CIA Paulista, I have a fantastic coach, Carlos Vieira and supportive family, friends and SPONSORS that make this all possible.

Everyday I work harder to achieve my goals and dreams. Blood, sweat and tears. Jiu Jitsu is my life.
